June 14, 2013, Dallas, TX- Each year a little over two hundred thousand American women choose to have breast augmentations and implants. Deciding to have the procedure is just the first step in the process; the patient must then decide which type of breast implant or she wants whether it will be silicone, saline or a fat transfer.

A large number of women opt for silicone implants. A recent study conducted by the University of British Colombia, Vancouver, published in the March issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, was aimed at discovering if women preferred the more traditional round-shaped implants or the new cohesive gel implants, the Naturelle 410, which has a more natural teardrop shape.

The researchers asked a total 63 patients, who had more anatomically-shaped implants, and 65 patients, who had the more traditionally-shaped round silicone implants, about their overall satisfaction with their implants. The participants were asked a series of questions relating to various aspects of their lives including their psychological and sexual well-being, as well as their overall satisfaction with their breast augmentation and whether they were pleased with the final outcome.

Respondents, who had the more new tear drop shaped implants, reported a 77 percent satisfaction with their procedure while patients who had round implants reported a 75 percent satisfaction with their breast augmentation. The survey indicated that only a very small percentage of breast augmentation patients preferred the newly-approved Naturell 410 implants.

It should be noted that the Naturalle 410 cohesive gel implants, developed by Allergan are still in the research phase and are only available to a small group, just 2,000 patients over the next decade, but could become more widely available to a larger group in the near future.

Many women, who have considering having breast implants, are unsure if silicone is right for them, especially when you considering some of the negative publicity this type of implant has received.

Earlier incarnations of silicone implants were prone to leakage and other health issues, leading the FDA to ban silicone implants in 1992. However newer generations of silicone implants have been greatly improved and regained FDA approval in 2006. Improvements to the outer shells of more recent generations of silicone implants make them less-likely to rupture or leak, and give them a more natural look and feel.

Saline breast implants have also been known to rupture or leak, so that is not a risk exclusive to silicone breast implants. The primary difference is that saline is more easily absorbed into the body than silicone thereby reducing the risk of adverse reactions.

For some women who may want a breast augmentation, but are concerned about the risks associated with both saline and silicone implants, there is a third option; using their own fat derived from liposuction to increase breast size or improve shape.
