June 20, 2013, Dallas, TX- Breast augmentations happen to be one of the most sought after and frequently performed cosmetic surgeries worldwide. Women choose to have breast implants or augmentations because the procedure makes them feel more attractive and enhances their self-esteem. Since cosmetic breast enhancements are so popular, researchers at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons wanted to see just how satisfied patients were with their surgery and what long-term benefits it afforded them.

breast augmentation

In 2012 alone, U.S. plastic surgeons performed 286,000 breast augmentations, making it the most popular cosmetic surgery.

The study, which was published in the May issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the official Journal of the ASPS, showed that the majority of women, 99 percent, were satisfied with their surgery immediately afterwards, and their level of satisfaction did not diminish over time. Women, who had a breast procedure, continued to be happy with the results they achieved five years after their initial procedure.

To determine the benefits of a breast augmentation, researchers presented 225 women, whose average age was 34, with a battery of questions one month after their surgery, and again five years later. Participants were asked about their recovery, satisfaction with their implants, and the subsequent psychological effects of their procedure, the ASPS explained in a press release. Most of the study participants received saline implants.

Immediately following their procedure, the majority of study participants admitted they experienced some pain, giving it a 5.9 on a 10 point pain scale, and needed pain medications five days following their procedure, the ASPS reported. The women reported that they “were back to normal” and no longer experienced pain within 25 days after the surgery.

However, the researchers reported that 40 percent of the respondents said they experienced minimal numbness in their nipples immediately following their surgery. Just two percent of breast augmentation patients experienced persistent problems with nipple numbness.

An overwhelming majority of women, 85 percent, were pleased with the size of their new breasts, describing them as “just right,” while only a small fraction, 13 percent, stating they wished they had chosen a larger sized implant.

Only two percent of breast augmentation patients were displeased with their scars, which are located under the breasts at the crease.  Well-practiced cosmetic surgeons make like Dr. Jeffery Adelglass have the skills necessary to make certain that scarring from a breast implant is minimal.

Overall, 98 percent of the women surveyed said their breast implants met or exceeded their expectations and they were satisfied with the firmness.

This study confirmed that breast augmentations can actually increase a person’s level of happiness and give them more self-confidence. Ninety-four percent of the women surveyed said they experienced a boost to their self-esteem following their breast augmentation. A smaller group, 64 percent, of the women said their procedure improved their quality of life.

For women who are considering undergoing a breast augmentation, breast lift or implants, but have been reluctant because of concerns about pain, recovery, and their long-term satisfaction, the results of this study can help answer any questions that have made them reluctant.

Of course, enduring satisfaction with a cosmetic breast enhancement is dependent upon the expertise and skills of the surgeon performing the procedure. Dr. Jeffery Adelglass, a talented and experienced Dallas cosmetic surgeon, has helped numerous women attain larger and more beautiful breasts. Making his patients happy and more attractive is his goal.
