Foto-facials involve the use of light therapy as a facial treatment. The two main types of technology used for photo facials are LED (light-emitting diode) and intense pulsed light (IPL).  With IPL, blasts of a polychromatic, high-intensity light are used to penetrate just below the skin’s surface. This corrects numerous skin imperfections. The most common issues patients seek treatment for are age spots, sun damage and broken capillaries. The light is used to damage the melanin and the vessels that cause these skin issues. The skins natural healing abilities get to work on the “damage”, leaving behind a smoother, more even skin tone and a boost in collagen and elastin.  This boost plumps the skin, giving it a tighter, younger appearance and also minimizes large pores.plastic surgeon

An IPL foto-facial can be used to treat spider veins, chronic facial redness, rosacea, weathered areas on the neck, arms and chest, as well as the back of the hands are also treatable.  Fine lines around the mouth, crows feet and dark circles around the eyes as well as pigmented lesions and acne scars can all be effectively treated with foto-facial treatments.

The IPL emits a broad spectrum of light with each pulse. The broad spectrum of light in each pulse allows us to treat a variety of skin imperfections at the same time. A bright blast of light is delivered at very high energy levels through a device, penetrating the layers of the skin.

The procedure is 30 minutes long, performed by medical professionals and is repeated in three-week intervals. The full regiment consists of six treatments. Prior to the procedure a topical cream is applied to the treatment area to prevent discomfort. The feeling patients have described experiencing during the procedure is similar to the feeling of a rubber band snapping against the skin. Redness post treatment is normal and usually ends within 24 hours, the most it’s been know to last is up to three days, only in very rare cases. The visual results appear gradually over the span of a few weeks.  There is no down time, you can return to work immediately.

Patients must have light skin for treatments to be effective. If you have a desire to tighten skin or fix various skin imperfections at the same time, foto-facial treatments may be the perfect option for you. A consultation with a medical professional is the best way to discern if you’re a good candidate for foto-facial treatments. This treatment is not effective on deeper wrinkles or frown lines or other deep scars. For deeper lines, Botox, Dysport, dermal fillers, and various other laser skin resurfacing options are available.
